United puts unbeaten streak on line

Now unbeaten in eleven 11 games, D.C. United heads to Columbus for the second time this season.

D.C. tied the Crew, 1-1, at Crew Stadium on May 20 before pummeling them, 5-1, at RFK Stadium on May 31, United’s biggest win of the season.

But Columbus also enters on an unbeaten streak – four consecutive draws – and they managed a 1-1 tie in Houston on Tuesday with 11 players missing, including 10 due to injuries. The Crew has won one of its last nine.

United goalkeeper Troy Perkins continues to lead the league in shutouts (six) and he’s tied with Chicago goalkeeper Zach Thornton for saves (59).

“It’s a crime if he doesn’t make the All-Star team,” saidD.C. forward Alecko Eskandarian.

With a goal or assist this weekend, United attacking midfielder Christian Gomez (6 goals, 6 assists) can equal the league’s longest streak this year of eight consecutive games with a point, and forward Jaime Moreno (9 goals, 4 assists) has a goal or assist in five straight games.
