Duval was last to win the following week after capturing first PGA Tour victory
Tied for the lead in the Players Championship, Rickie Fowler is attempting to win PGA Tour events on consecutive weekends. The last player to do it was Tiger Woods in 2009 (Buick, Bridgestone). The last to do it, however, in winning his first and second PGA Tour events – as Fowler is attempting — was David Duval in 1997.
Their styles and personalities have little in common. But the career arcs of Duval, who broke through at age 25, and Fowler, who is 23, are similar. Duval’s first win came in his 87th PGA Tour event and six runner-up finishes. Fowler’s win last week in the Wells Fargo came in his 67th PGA Tour start and after four runner-ups.
Duval actually won three consecutive starts in 1997, capturing the season-ending Tour Championship two weeks after winning the Walt Disney. Duval’s breakthrough came in Williamsburg, Va. at the Michelob Classic.
Here’s a list of PGA Tour winners on consecutive weekends over the last 15 years (Don’t confuse this list with victories in consecutive starts — separated by weeks off — which would be longer).
