For female senators, shaking hands is so last century

Washington may seem like a stiff, striped suit, strong handshake type of town, but not when you get some of the most powerful women in the country together.

At Tuesday’s preview of the documentary “14 Women” (which focuses on the 109th Congress’ 14 female senators), Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., made sure to hug everyone before taking to the podium.

“We may be senators, but we’re girls and we still like to hug,” Lincoln said.

And these women aren’t afraid to concede that, well, size doesn’t matter. When it was Sen. Barbara Boxer’s turn to take to the podium, she brought along a box to stand on.

“Size is not an impediment to serving in the U.S. Senate,” the California Democrat said.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., echoed that sentiment, saying that the Senate now has different sizes of podiums: extra large, medium and petite.

But there was at least one male there to represent the guys: Accenture Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Bill Green, who thanked “the guys that turned up — somebody to hold my hand.”
