It’s not easy explaining life’s great mysteries. But we’ll try to anyway:
1. What in the world was Terrell Owens thinking? The unemployed wide receiver was a guest presenter at Wednesday’s CMT Music Awards in Nashville, Tenn., where he broke out into a scripted rendition of “Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” Two words: rock bottom.
2. What in the world was Dan Patrick thinking? We don’t have a problem with Jeremy Roenick — former Chicago Blackhawks star and current NBC analyst — being a bit emotional on the air after Chicago won the Stanley Cup. We do have a problem with Patrick, who, after Roenick gutted through his analysis, kicked things right back to his teetering broadcast partner by asking Roenick why the moment was affecting him. Not smooth, Dan.
3. Why is the Big 12 imploding? This might seem like a dumb question, but with the exception of the SEC, isn’t the Big 12 the best top-to-bottom football conference in the country — at least on the field? It seems ridiculous that the Big Ten and Pac-10 are picking it apart this easily.
4. Does LeBron James have a “LeBron James countdown to free agency” app on his iPhone? Seriously, everywhere we look — ESPN.com, sports talk radio Web sites — there’s a clock ticking down the hours to NBA free agency. We think he has one. After all, how else is he going to remember the date? It’s not like anybody is talking about it.
5. Can the Orioles do anything right? Well, they’ve lost seven straight series. But Saturday’s interleague game against the Mets is supposed to feature an Orioles-Ravens free rally cap giveaway. (Hooray!) Alas, the hats might not get to the park in time because of “vendor distribution issues.” (Booo!) So, no, they can’t do anything right.
