Fallston?s path to its 10th state title in field hockey has been a little easier, and it had nothing to do with anything on the field.
When Severna Park, traditionally the state?s best team, moved up from Class 3A to 4A this season, Fallston?s chances of winning the title in the state?s second-largest classification improved. The Cougars (16-2-1) have done part ? now they just have to finish a tremendous season by defeating Bethesda-Chevy Chase (15-3) at Broadneck High on Tuesday night at 7.
The Cougars, who are seeking their first state championship since 2001, likely will have to play their best game of the season to defeat the Barons, who have won 13 state titles ? second in the state to Severna Park?s 16. Bethesda-Chevy Chase lost to Severna Park in last year?s 3A final.
The Cougars (16-2-1) put themselves in this position by defeating Howard County champion Centennial, 5-1, in the semifinals. The game marked the final one for Centennial coach Gail Purcell, who is retiring with a 300-127-21 record in 33 seasons.
“Warming up [for Centennial], I felt like we were ready to play,” Fallston coach Alice Puckett said. “I?m really excited for the opportunity our team has now.”
Severna Park had eliminated Fallston in the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, as the Falcons beat the Cougars in the state semifinals in 2006 and in the state final the previous season.
“Our loss last year hurt,” junior forward Lindsey Puckett, the coach?s daughter who scored three times against Centennial, said. “We wanted to get back to the finals and win for the seniors.”
