Overtime loss haunts Loyola

An overtime loss to Georgetown still haunts the Loyola College women?s lacrosse team. The Greyhounds dropped their final game of 2006, 8-7, after the Hoyas tied the game with seven seconds remaining.

The loss tipped the scales for Loyola, who finished 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the Big East Conference. Loyola, which starts its 2007 campaign against visiting Hofstra on Feb. 25, are ready to turn some heads.

“It was a disappointing end to last year,” Loyola senior captain Liz Peregoy said. “That has fueled some revenge for us. I think it was enough to get us ready for this year.”

The Greyhounds lost nine seniors from last year. Even though the team is young and lacks experience at certain positions, Peregoy thinks she can turn that into an advantage.

“We have a lot of talent, and we are so diverse,” Peregoy said. “We are going to have freshmen and sophomores starting, and there will be no separation between classes.”

Co-captain and midfielder Kate McHarg, one of four seniors on the team and the leading scorer last season with 60 goals and nine assists, wants to see how far this team can go. She said the team is excited to have Maryland back on the schedule and to get another shot at Georgetown.

Coach Kerri O?Day wants her players to be hungry for revenge against Georgetown, but she is careful to make sure they focus on the bigger picture.

“Our first focus is in winning Big East conference,” O?Day said. “We play a tough schedule and need to keep focused and peak at the right time.”
