Much-traveled pitcher endures time of unknowns

Bowie Baysox pitcher Eric DuBose wasn?t shy about succinctly summing up his season before last week?s All-Star break.

“It?s been a long, tough year,” he said, matter of factly.

DuBose, once a promising pitcher for the big league Orioles, has played for both the Triple-A Ottawa Lynx and Double-A Bowie this season. Despite the movement, he now boasts a 4-1 record with the Baysox, including two complete games and two shutouts, both team-leading statistics.

Bowie pitching coach Scott McGregor and manager Don Werner were on the same page concerning both Dubose?s work this season and his future.

“This is the best I?ve seen him throw,” McGregor said.

McGregor pointed out Dubose?s three straight eight-inning outings in late June and early July and increased control of his fastball.

“He?s really pitching like I?ve always envisioned he could, and he?s just got to keep doing it,” McGregor added.

Werner said as long as Dubose can keep his fastball hovering near 90 mph, an organization will probably make a move for him.

“You kind of hate tosee him playing Double-A ball,” Werner said. “But it?s an opportunity for him to stay on the mound and continue to pitch. There are scouts here all the time, and hopefully, somebody, whether it?s the Orioles or not, will need a left-handed pitcher.”

In his 50.1 innings pitched in Bowie, Dubose has allowed only 33 hits and his 1.79 ERA is among the team?s best.

And with his regained confidence in his fastball and continued success with his other three pitches, it?s just a matter of time.

“There?s a lot of stuff going on this year,” he said. “But the arm feels great, and I?m throwing pretty good. We?ll see.”
