Rex Grossman knows what his critics say. He also knows they’re vocal. And, yes, they provide motivation.
Grossman is the new Redskins starting quarterback, but he’s hardly a new starter. Which is what led to his critics; in 31 career starts Grossman has tossed 36 interceptions and only 33 touchdowns. He did help Chicago reach the Super Bowl in 2006, but he started just eight more games for them in the ensuing two seasons.
Grossman’s career passer rating is 69.5.
“Everyone has doubters in any situation,” he said. “Until you prove yourself on a consistent basis you’re going to have doubters. I’m human, how could you not be motivated to show everybody who’s mocking this or talking on the radio or TV thinking they’re smart. I’m totally motivated to prove not only to them, but to myself and my teammates that I’m a bonafide starter in this league and can lead this team to a championship one day.
“Motivation is going to be a factor.”
Grossman said he’s a different quarterback from when he last was a full-time starter in 2007 (he started seven of the eight games he played). He started just once in 2008 and appeared in one game with Houston last season.
“I’ve definitely had some time to reflect,” Grossman said, “and what I would do differently and how I would go about it. I definitely have a game plan not only for Dallas, but for myself as well.”
Though teammates were surprised by the move, they weren’t stunned. After all, the Redskins are 5-8 with an offense that ranks 29th in points scored. But they didn’t want to make it about Rex vs. Donovan McNabb.
“Rex is a very intelligent dude,” said tight end Chris Cooley. “Game plan wise, understanding the calls, understanding the looks, Rex is 100 percent there. He’s just got to come in and play. He’s got to be able to make the throws. Rex knows where to go with the ball, but he still has to come in and play. And that was a huge ability that Donovan had – to come in and make big plays and big throws.”
“Just knowing what kind of player Rex is and what kind of guy he is when it comes to this offense,” receiver Santana Moss said, “we still have a chance with him.”
Grossman also is playing for a new contract.
“It’s a big opportunity for me to go out and go play well and lead this team to a victory,” Grossman said. “It’s pretty obvious what’s at stake. I’m very excited about it. … I want to play well these last three games, then it’s out of my hands.”
