Winning out now should be enough

It’s only late September. But now that Boise State has honored its half of the “show-us-what-you’re-made-of” bargain, it’s worth revisiting our favorite college football punching bag: the BCS.

The Broncos dismantled Oregon State 37-24 on Saturday night, piling up 469 yards of offense and holding the dynamic Jacquizz Rodgers in check. With a second win over a ranked team from a BCS conference, Boise State presumably now has a clear path to a second consecutive unbeaten season — and with it potentially a trip to the national championship game.

As long as they keep winning, the Broncos should be ranked no lower than third when the first BCS polls come out Oct. 17. But now that Boise State’s resume-bumping games are over, the Broncos can do little more than win and hope either Ohio State or Alabama slips.

At this point — however ludicrous it may seem — even that might not be enough to send Boise State to the BCS title game. Virginia Tech’s loss to James Madison appears to be hurting the Broncos as much as the Hokies, leading to the belief that a one-loss Alabama or a one-loss Ohio State still holds the hammer.

This is getting ridiculous. The Broncos flew across the country to beat preseason No. 10 Virginia Tech. They powered through top-25 Oregon State and still have to play at high-powered Nevada. If Boise State goes undefeated and Alabama or Ohio State falters, the Broncos should be in. They simply have been screwed with for too long.
