Mulitalo done for the season

Ravens left offensive guard Edwin Mulitalo will miss the rest of the season after tearing his right triceps in Sunday?s win over San Diego.

“It hurts,” Ravens head coach Brian Billick said. “Edwin deserved better, given all that he?s been through.”

Jason Brown, a second-year player, replaced Mulitalo late in the game Sunday and will start next Monday in Denver. Brown expressed regret that his opportunity to contribute will come at the expense of Mulitalo.

“He?s a great leader of our team, a very, very valued asset,” Brown said. “I?m very humbled and very privileged to be able to step up and help my team out, but for it to come at that price of Edwin … it really hurts.”

Mulitalo had expressed optimism following the game that he would not be out long. Originally, the team announced that he had suffered an elbow injury. But the Ravens said Monday that Mulitalo?s injury would require surgery.

Brown was taken in the fourth round ofthe 2005 NFL draft from the University of North Carolina and will get just the second start of his career against the Broncos. Coincidentally, Brown?s first start also came at Denver last season when he replaced an injured Mulitalo.

“It was a blur,” Brown said of that game. “You?ve got to know your assignment and you?ve got to be on top of it.”

Where is Mike Anderson? The signing of running back Mike Anderson during the offseason was trumpeted as a major score for the Ravens. At that point, it was unclear if the team was going to retain Jamal Lewis, now its all-time yardage leader.

Lewis ultimately resigned and the team said it would find carries for both of the 1,000-yard rushers. Anderson has been squeezed out of carries, however, with the emergence of Musa Smith.

The Ravens have yet to have a 100-yard rusher in a game this season, and Anderson has barely been seen since his long touchdown run against the Raiders in week two. He has carried nine times for 59 yards so far.

It is unsure what role Anderson will play against his former team.

“We?ve been limited in our ability to run the ball, which is something we have to address,” Billick said. “So you?d love to get them all involved with it, but the number of snaps we?ve had in the running game the last two games makes it a little prohibitive to get everybody involved.”
