Meissner goes national

After becoming its figure skating champion, Kimmie Meissner is making sure every corner of the United States recognizes her smile and trademark giggle.

On Wednesday, the Bel Air native made a stop in New York to appear on the “Today Show.” Around 8:45 Wednesday morning, she appeared on the program?s “Today at The Rink” segment and skated to Avril Lavigne?s “Keep Holding On.” She was dressed head to toe in Under Amour, her newest corporate partner.

“I wear it every day,” Meissner said of the Baltimore-based sports apparel. “I wear it to work out, to skate.”

Under Armour released a statement Wednesday noting that Meissner and college softball star Cat Osterman have been added to the company?s list of athlete representatives.

“Under Armour searches for authenticity in all of its partnerships, so we?re thrilled to welcome Cat and Kimmie into the Under Armour family of elite athletes,” said Bill Kraus, Under Armour?s senior vice president of marketing, in the release.

As part of the partnership, Meissner, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, will be outfitted with Under Armour during her training and non-competitive ice time, such as Wednesday?s television appearance. She also recently partnered with Visa for an advertising spot, and Tuesday she was busy taping a national commercial for Subway with Jared Fogel, the company?s commercial spokesman.

“I met Jared, which was really cool,” Meissner said on the “Today Show.” “He does a great Napoleon Dynamite impression.”

Since winning the U.S. Championships Saturday, Meissner has been busy and will remain as such. Not only will she balance her usual routine of daily practice and school with the aim of graduating this spring, she?ll continue to skate competitively.

Her father, Paul, said Tuesday night that Kimmie will be participating in the ISU Four Continents Championships in Colorado Springs on Feb. 8-10. After that, Meissner will have her sights on defending arguably her biggest achievement so far at the World Championships in Tokyo, starting on March 19.

“It feels really good,” Meissner said of her U.S. title Wednesday on TV. “And I?m really excited because I made worlds again this year.”
