I thought D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn’s statement in this story was quite telling. I’m not sure he had admitted before of the idea that he knew at times last year that the players at his disposal weren’t good enough. Back to this season, United’s upcoming stretch of three games in eight days is certainly a chance for him to get on the radar for coach of the year.
While I’m here, United should learn today the results of the “coin flip” that will determine who hosts the U.S. Open Cup match between D.C. and New York. U.S. Soccer put out its first release regarding the tournament yesterday, a release that glaringly didn’t include any mention of the winner earning a place in the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League. Part of the reason has to do with the fact that CONCACAF hasn’t announced the format for its tournament. The expectation is if it stays the same, the U.S. Open Cup winner is likely to be included again.
