Wednesday was “Don King Day” in the District of Columbia. The celebration however, was missing one key element: Don King.

Thanks to a measure by Councilman Jack Evans, Wednesday’s noon event in the D.C. Council chamber was to involve Evans presenting the legendary boxing promoter with a U.S. flag, which flew over the Capitol on the request of boxing fan John McCain.
Invited to attend were the likes of President Bush, McCain, Al Sharpton, and boxing greats such as Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (Though, to be fair, it’s unclear whether any of them were going to show up.)
But just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the King camp sent Evans’ office an e-mail informing them that “due to unforeseen circumstances, Mr. King will not be able to attend today’s event. We apologize for any difficulties this presents to your planned presentation.” So anyone who came to the chamber expecting to see King was instead greeted by a budget hearing.
When asked if the event would be rescheduled, a source involved with the event said, “I don’t think so.”
