Westwood one: Edison’s Campbell

Edison senior Doreena Campbell has verbally committed to play basketball at UCLA, according to Eagles coach Diane Lewis.

Campbell, a 5-foot-10 guard, enters her fourth year as a starter for Edison this winter. She averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game to lead the Eagles to the Group AAA state championship game. She chose the Bruins over scholarship offers from Virginia, Vanderbilt and George Washington.

“Academics were a high priority for Doreena and she has family out west and had been to camps at Stanford and UCLA,” Lewis said. “But when she took her official visit to UCLA last month she was completely blown away.”

UCLA is a program on the rise under coach Kathy Olivier. The Bruins finished 21-11 last season and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Purdue on the road. UCLA also beat Stanford in overtime to win the Pac-10 Conference tournament title for the first time in program history. The Bruins notched two wins over the Cardinal for the first time since 1988.

“They had shown a strong interest in Doreena for a long time,” said Lewis. “It’s a gratifying feeling to see how far she’s come the last few years. All the hard work has paid off.”

As a junior, Campbell led Edison to its first Northern Region title since 1978, scoring 14 points to fuel a comeback win over Marshall in the region semifinals. She also scored a game-high 29 points in a state semifinal win over Princess Anne. Campbell led the Eagles in steals and was third in assists.
