Macklin transfers

Georgetown announced Thursday that sophomore forward Vernon Macklin decided to transfer.

With the graduation of Roy Hibbert this spring, the 6-foot-9 Macklin was set to become the Hoyas’ starting center, but Georgetown also boasts a standout incoming class that includes 6-10 Greg Monroe, the nation’s top recruit according to Rivals.com and Scout.com, and 6-10 Henry Sims.

Macklin averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game during the 2007-08 season, setting career highs in minutes played (26) and points (18) against St. John’s on Jan. 30. He had eight points and three rebounds in the Hoyas’ NCAA second-round loss to Davidson.

Macklin struggled at the free throw line throughout his career, hitting just 22 of 71 attempts (31 percent).

“We appreciate the hard work he put in at Georgetown, both on and off the floor,” said Hoyas head coach John Thompson III in a statement. “We wish him the best in the future.”
