Spurlock spurns Ireton, bound for Montrose

Woodbridge High rising sophomore basketball star Tristan Spurlock will transfer to Montrose Christian High, according to multiple sources.

The 6-foot-7 Spurlock spent this summer playing for Bishop Ireton High and had been accepted to the school, according to Ireton coach Mark Vincent, before Spurlock’s family decided last week that Montrose was a better fit.

“We obviously wanted Tristan here, but he will not be attending Ireton next year,” Vincent said. “He’s a great kid and, in my mind, a high-Division I player.”

“But when his family weighed the pros and cons they went in another direction.”

Spurlock, who plays AAU basketball for the D.C. Blue Devils under-16 team, averaged 10 points and eight rebounds per game for Woodbridge as a freshman. He is considered one of the top 40 players in his class nationally by several recruiting services.

Oakton assistant hired

Oakton High has hired Dave Spannbauer as its new boys basketball coach, according to the school’s activities director, Phil Levine.

Spannbauer, a retired federal government employee, was an Oakton assistant last season under former Cougars coach Chris Dux, who resigned in May.

He was one of four finalists for the position. Spannbauer previously was the head women’s basketball coach at Marymount from 1979 to 1982 and at Catholic from 1983 to 1987.

Cardinals search nears end

Woodbridge High is in the final stages of hiring its new activities director, principal Alan Ross said Tuesday. The school has submitted a finalist to the Prince William County school board for approval and individual votes are due back to the superintendent’s office by Friday. Ross declined to name the candidate, who will replace the outgoing Michelle Heindrichs.
