Cuban libre!

Two things conspired to pack the downstairs Gryphon Room at the Guards in Georgetown on Sunday night: a federal holiday the next day and the presence of a partying Mark Cuban, the controversial owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

“He stayed for a couple hours. The crowd loved him,” said Guards manager Fritz Brogan.

It’s not the first time Cuban, who also owns HDNet and is trying to buy the Chicago Cubs, has partied in Georgetown. Last time the team was in town, his favored location was Smith Point on Wisconsin Avenue. “He loves the preppy bars and the young blondes,” Brogan said.

Cuban landed in the nation’s capital (his team lost to the Wizards at Verizon Center on Monday) on the heels of an interview in which he told GQ magazine he gets audited every year and he “had someone who worked for a government agency accuse me of throwing the playoff series with the Warriors last year.”

He also said that while he’s a libertarian, he’s not supporting Ron Paul because the Texan isn’t a “legitimate candidate,” and that the YouTube debates were “the most degrading thing you could do to the presidential process.”
