Martin is cited on drug charge

Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin was cited for possessing an illegal drug after Transportation Security Administration screeners at Hopkins Airport in Cleveland discovered he had three bags of marijuana Saturday evening, according to WKYC in Ohio.

WKYC reported a spokesman for the Cleveland Police confirmed a man sharing Martin?s name and date of birth was cited for drug abuse after TSA screeners allegedly discovered him with marijuana.

Calls to the Ravens were not immediately returned.

Martin, 23, is entering his third season with the Ravens. Martin was selected by the Ravens in the sixth round (208th pick overall) in the draft in 2006. In college at Wyoming, Martin started 24 of the 30 games he played and finished with 134 tackles and six interceptions. He also had three blocked punts, returning two for touchdowns.

But Martin still is trying to establish himself in the NFL. The 5-foot-10, 202-pounder appeared in eight games and recorded four tackles during his rookie season. Last season, Martin played in all 16 games, starting three. Martin finished with 40 tackles, seven pass deflections and two interceptions.

Martin?s role this season was uncertain after the team acquired veterans Fabian Washington and Frank Walker from the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers. They were expected to compete with Martin and last year?s starters, Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle, for playing time.

The Ravens? secondary had its share of problems en route to last season?s 5-11 record. The Ravens gave up a league-worst 15 passing plays of at least 40 yards, were third-worst by allowing 53 plays of at least 20 yards, and ranked 20th out of 32 teams in passing defense by surrendering 222.3 yards per game.

The Ravens? training camp begins July 21 when rookies, quarterbacks and injured veterans report. The team opens its season Sept. 7 when it hosts AFC North rival Cincinnati at M&T Bank Stadium.
