Lady Liberty and Marie Antoinette were on hand Monday for Brasserie Les Halles’ 34th annual Bastille Day Waiter Races.

Philippe Lajaunie, owner of Les Halles, said the event supports the friendship between U.S. and France, even during the war-related rift in 2002. The race for waiters and waitresses was the final and main event, requiring participants to carry a bottle of water and a half-full glass on their trays for three laps with only one hand.

Winner Macs Smith, a waiter at Les Halles, said he was just happy that someone from Les Halles won.

“I have, like, obscenely long legs,” Smith said of his win.

The first race of the day, “Les Halles Angels Race,” was for children, many of whom managed to break all three of the racing rules by running, spilling and eating their fries.
