Scott Wagner has attracted many of the top up-and-coming boxers in the country to fight at his Ballroom Boxing series.
Wagner believes he accomplished that goal again with his latest card Thursday at Michael?s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie. However, this time Wagner didn?t need to look far from home to book his boxers, as this is the first time in recent memory that no fighters will have flown in for the card.
“This is the type of card we envisioned when we first started Ballroom Boxing,” said Wagner, who started the series with his father, Michael, in 1995.
Baltimore-based boxers are featured in the top two fights with a number of other local fighters sprinkled throughout the card. In the main event, middleweight Ishmail Arvin (13-0-2, 6 knockouts) will take on Purcell Miller (21-4-1, 17 KOs) in a scheduled eight-rounder. In the other featured bout, heavyweight Jed Phipps (17-4, 10 KOs) will face James Stanton (17-6, 8 KOs). That bout is scheduled for six rounds. Both Phipps and Arvin have fought numerous times in the Ballroom Boxing series.
“Ismail is a fighter who has the ability to go far, as long as he stays mentally focused,” Wagner said. “And Jed is a fighter whose heart, desire and will-to-win can?t be questioned.”
Featherweight Tyrell Samuel (6-0, 4 KOs) and welterweight Tim Coleman (4-0, 1 KO) are the other two Baltimore-area fighters expected to compete on the card. Samuel will face Margarito Lopez (8-15-1, 3 KOs), and Coleman will take on Muhsin Corebrey (4-1-1, 1 KO).
The scheduled eight-bout card includes three light-heavyweight bouts ? Farah Ennis (2-0) vs. Chris Edmonds (1-2), Reuel Williams (0-1) vs. Brenton Artis (record not available) and Jameson Bostick (6-3) vs. a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Unbeaten middleweight Derek Ennis (10-0-1) is also on the card.
