When Stuart Kenworthy watched Appalachian State upset Michigan at the beginning of the season, as a punter, he took note of the Mountaineers’ two blocked kicks. The Delaware junior didn’t figure it would the same special teams unit he’d face in the biggest game of his college career.
A multi-sport standout at St. Albans High, including the football team’s tight end and punter, Kenworthy hardly expected to have a college career. Only one Blue Hens coach knew him when he walked on as a freshman in 2005, and even Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler barely knew Kenworthy’s name when he was promoted from scout team defensive lineman to starting punter four games into that season.
But he’s kept the job ever since, averaging 37.2 yards per punt this season.
“It’s all kind of surreal,” said Kenworthy. “It’s like something that only happens in a movie, taking exams in hotel rooms and playing in the national championship.”
