Skins @ Eagles: First quarter review

End of 1st: Eagles 10, Redskins 7

1st Qtr | 2nd Qtr | 3rd Qtr | 4th Qtr

» Great awareness by Quinton Ganther on the onside kick; had he turned and run back downfield to set up and block – as the Eagles clearly anticipated – they would have recovered the ball. Instead, he caught it on a bounce and returned it 28 yards.

» Looked like a designed run by Jason Campbell on the goal-line – got a nice block from Marcus Mason and another from Mike Sellers. Guess this means Campbell’s ankles are feeling better.

» The Redskins opened with a two tight-end set on three of their first four plays. Quick passes and misdirection plays. Those should help against a reshuffled linebacking group.

» The Eagles are doing what Dallas did last week; run up the middle. Minus Albert Haynesworth, the Redskins front four are a bit weaker.

» Can’t understand why Philly didn’t try to ram it in on third and goal from the 1. Had they handed it to Leonard Weaver, whom they faked to instead, he would have scored standing up. The hole was that big.

» The pass interference penalty on Brent Celek did not seem to have a bearing on the touchdown pass

» Fred Davis only seems to catch passes right between the numbers. When he has to move his hands up, his success rate plummets. The pass from Jason Campbell could have been better; it also could have been caught. An athletic tight end should not have that much problem catching passes when he has to raise his arms.

» The Eagles constantly outsmart themselves. They’ve been pounding the Redskins up the middle, yet they try trickier in key situations. Few teams adhere to the script more than Philly, but they should be up 14-7.

» Looked like Reed Doughty was occupied by a receiver on the touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. Fred Smoot clearly gave up Jackson on the play. We’ll find out later where the breakdown occurred. Learned long ago not to take things for granted in these cases.

» Nice shake by Quinton Ganther to make Quintin Mikell miss on his 10-yard run. Ganther runs hard.

» Stephon Heyer gives away the pass too much. On the last play of the first quarter, he was set back and in a two-point stance. Sure enough, a pass. The guy gives away too many clues as to what play is coming.

» Too many times guys are unblocked. Too many.
