Georgetown, Maryland both get high seeds in NCAA men’s soccer tournament

One year after missing out on the NCAA tournament, the Georgetown men’s soccer team captured one of four top seeds in the 48-team field announced Monday.

The Hoyas (17-3-1) earned the tournament’s No. 3 overall seed despite falling in double overtime in the Big East tournament final to Notre Dame 3-2. The NCAA berth is Georgetown’s second in three years after last making the tournament in 1997.

Maryland (17-1-2), which won its third ACC championship in five seasons with a 2-1 win over North Carolina, was slotted as the No. 2 seed. Virginia (9-6-4) also earned a bid.

The Terps and Hoyas both have byes to the second round and will host games Sunday. If the tournament seeds hold, they would meet in the national semifinals Dec. 7 at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.

If that happens, feuding Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson and his Georgetown counterpart, Lee Reed, should attend — perhaps with men’s basketball coaches Mark Turgeon and John Thompson III — and be forced to sit together.
