Sunday in the Maryland State Golf Association A Team quarterfinals, DeRisio and Holland led Columbia to a surprisingly decisive victory over powerful Breton Bay of Leonardtown, 12-6.
With DeRisio and Holland playing at home and sweeping Joe Fenlon and Dale Abell, 3-0, Columbia avenged a quarterfinal loss two years ago to Breton Bay, which won the 2006 and 2007 MSGA titles.
In 2007, Breton Bay swept Columbia, 9-0, in Leonardtown, But this time, Columbia pro Bob Dolan and teammate Todd Fulmer shut out the Breton Bay duo of Justin Heimer and Brian Heinkey, 3-0. Columbia also got a lift from recent University of Virginia graduate Greg Carlin who teamed with venerable Marty West for a 2-1 win over Greg Roberts and Breton Bay pro Mark Cusic.
DeRisio, also a member at Springfield Country Club, is a three-time champion at Columbia, but downplays his contributions when teaming with Holland, the state amateur runner-up in 2007.
“We play so well together. But he’s so good, we can’t help it,” said DeRisio. “He takes me along for the ride. Then I just [come] out of the closet every once in a while to help out.”
Columbia, the runner-up last year to Baltimore Country Club, is seeking its record 12th Maryland title. On Saturday, Columbia will face a familiar foe in the semifinals in Bethesda Country Club, which is seeking its seventh state title and first since 1986.
Other quarterfinal results:
Bethesda advanced Sunday with a 12-6 win over Beaver Creek. In the previous two rounds, Bethesda escaped with victories over Manor and the University of Maryland, both by 9.5-8.5.
In the other semifinal bracket, Towson will face Mountain Branch of Joppa. Towson, seeking its first MSGA title, stunned defending champion Baltimore Country Club, 10.5-7.5, on Sunday.
Mountain Branch, runner-up in 2007, edged Prospect Bay of Grasonville, in a playoff after the teams tied, 9-9. On the first extra hole, Mountain Branch’s par was good enough as both Prospect Bay players made bogey.
