An early update on free agency and the Redskins:
1. Left tackle Chad Clifton is scheduled to visit with them Friday. He would fill a massive void. Though he’s 33 years old, he is still a quality left tackle, and could be for a couple years. The draft has quality tackles, but only a couple project to the left side and guys like Bruce Campbell have question marks because of their production. The Packers offered Clifton $5 million a season, but he rejected the offer.

2. Julius Peppers will visit with Chicago on Friday. Were the Redskins really interested in him? Hard to say, but I had heard from two different sources that they did not think the Redskins would go after him. It’s still early — at this time in free agency a year ago the Albert Haynesworth deal was dead. But the Bears are desperate to sign him. Hard to imagine them not doing so.
3. Karlos Dansby told the Washington Post that the Redskins are on his list and that he intends to visit several teams. However he’ll visit with Miami on Friday and the Dolphins have to be considered the front runner.
4. The Redskins also are reportedly interested in Eagles end Jason Babin, a former first-round pick with Houston. He’s a defensive end, but if the Redskins go to a 3-4 front, then he would be considered small. He was not effective as an outside linebacker with Houston in … a 3-4. So stay tuned. The Eagles reportedly have a right of first refusal, meaning they could match any offer.
