» Examiner: Ohio State and Michigan is the biggest rivalry in college football. What do you remember from your days there and what did you see there this year?
» Tom Matte: Yesterday was the most prolific football game I have seen in college in so long. The tradition of that game is so unbelievable. I had Jack Nicholas sitting right next to me. We had more fun than you can shake a stick at.
» Examiner: How are quarterbacks like Troy Smith and Michael Vick different than the ones when you played?
» TM: That?s the way I made my living at Ohio State ? as quarterback. Woody [Hayes] did not like to throw the football too much.
They have got to contain [Vick]. Somebody will probably be a watch-dog, probably be Adalius Thomas because he is the only guy who can catch him.
(Atlanta leads Baltimore, 7-0, with just over a minute to go in the first half.)
» Examiner: What do you think of the Ravens? offense through the first half?
» TM: They are lethargic. There?s no hustle. It?s a crappy attitude. It?s the way they played the first half last week. Somebody has to step up here.
(After B.J. Sams? third big return, the Ravens punch in a second third-quarter touchdown and take a 17-10 lead.)
» TM: Everybody fell asleep in the first half and they woke up after halftime. B.J. Sams has more total offense than our whole team.
(Vick completes a 49-yard pass on third and long to put the Falcons in Ravens? territory.)
» TM: That is terrible, just terrible.
(The Ravens drive into Falcons? territory late in the fourth quarter looking for their third touchdown.)
» TM: They are earning it here, grinding it out and playing smash-mouth football. Other teams have to respect that.
» Examiner: Is that how you earned the respect of your opponents when you were with the Colts?
» TM: We got ahead and tried to run it, and Unitas tried to control the game with short passes and we would run the clock.
(Jamal Lewis runs for his third touchdown of the day to put the Ravens up 24-10 , sealing the win.)
» TM: They need two scores and won?t have time to come back … hopefully [laughs].
