Ovation for playoff hero Joel Ward

Caps forward Joel Ward received a nice ovation from a hundred or so fans as he stepped onto the ice at Kettler Iceplex on Friday morning for practice. Ward, of course, scored the game-winning goal in overtime of Game 7 against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday and lifted his team into the second round. He then endured a series of racist tweets that were eventually catalogued by various web sites. Ward, who attended a Toronto Blue Jays game at Camden Yards in Baltimore on Thursday, called it “a long day” on his personal Twitter account, but thanked everyone for their support and reiterated his pride in wearing Jackie Robinson’s No. 42.

Washington’s lines remained the same as they were late in the series against Boston with the healthy scratches again Jeff Halpern, Mathieu Perreault and Mattias Sjogren. All eight defensemen were on the ice, too, along with goalies Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth.
