Maryland Amateur goes dawn to dusk
When nine players teed off as nightfall approached at 7:25 p.m. Thursday at Chevy Chase Club, it was the beginning of the end of a long, wet day. The players had shot 76 and were tied for the final two precious slots in the 88th Maryland Amateur, necessitating a playoff.

Among players who had already qualified were defending champion Jay Mulieri (74), a rising sophomore at Loyola, two-time winner Brad Hastings (73), and former champions Daivd Nocar (72), and Pat Tallent (72).
The medalist was Billy Peel (70), a member at nearly Columbia Country Club and a rising senior at Eastern Kentucky, who was the only player in the field who matched par, making three birdies and as many bogeys on the challenging course.
Then, finally, came the playoff combatants. Some had been at the course for 13 hours.
After 80 minutes and dusk had fallen, there was one playoff qualifier, Sean Bosdosh, who drilled a curling 30-foot putt on the third and final extra hole. Three players remained — Mike Cohn, Phil Fairbanks, and Ken Lampard.
Weather permitting, they will finish their playoff today. Due to the rain, the 36-hole match-play final will be pushed back to Monday.
