On the Saturday evening before Christmas, a Yeas & Nays spy saw the Ward 7 freshman, coffee in hand, parked in an otherwise illegal space in front of the Starbucks on the corner of 8th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast.
Also on the scene: two D.C. police officers, clearly objecting to where she chose to idle her Land Rover, despite its D.C. Council license tags. According to our source, she was arguing with the officers and asking for their badge information, which they seemed reluctant to divulge.
According to Council Secretary Cynthia Brock-Smith, council members are covered by the same provision of the D.C. Code as members of Congress; that is, they can park in any available curbside space, providing the vehicle is being used for official business and tags identifying the owner as a council member are prominently displayed. Exceptions include rush-hour lanes, loading zones and spaces in front of firehouses and fire hydrants.
Alexander’s spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
