Regional meets provide tune-ups for state powers

After Friday, only 25 percent of the cross-country runners in Maryland public schools will still be running. Over the next two days, 15 starter pistols will fire all over the state, signifying the start of the 15 different regional meets.

In places like Towson, Bowie, La Plata and Salisbury, schools will be fighting for their place in the state meet at Hereford High in Parkton on Nov. 11. For many local schools, this chance to punch their ticket to states is the first step towards winning the state crown, while other less-talented teams are simply trying to extend their season.

The Severna Park girls, winners of four consecutive Class 3A regional titles and the defending state champs, have had another strong season. Led by coach Ed Purpura, the Falcons have a strong shot to go for five straight regional crowns today at Centennial. With standout Kelsey Hill averaging a 19:30 time per race, the Falcons are looking for her to rebound from some nagging season-long injuries and lead them to Parkton.

“I think our season has gone well,” Purpura said. “It?s the most successful season we have ever had. We are a very talented and tough team, and we are looking forward to tomorrow. We have won the region four years in a row and are looking forward to No. 5.”

The Atholton boys also have high hopes. Led by two outstanding runners, Andrew Revelle and Graham Bazelle, the Raiders are poised to make a legitimate run at a state title. Qualifying for the state meet each of the last three years, the Raiders have the pressure of expectations on their shoulders, but they shouldn?t struggle much at Thursday?s 2A South meet at Patuxent.

For the Hereford girls, sophomore phenom Kristen Malloy will look to continue her fantastic season and carry the Bulls to state-meet appearance on their home turf. Winners of the last two 2A state titles, Hereford is working on quite a legacy. The team won this year?s Bull Run race at Hereford, and the Bulls would like nothing more than to add another state title to the trophy case. The team competes in the 2A North meet at Goucher College on Friday.
