Pontius could be available this weekend

There is a light at the end of the tunnel,” D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper just said to me as we got off the phone.

Why?

To start, Chris Pontius (hamstring), who has been working tirelessly on improving/changing his gait, was back in training today, and he should be available for United’s match this weekend at Houston.

It’s only one guy, but still…

As for other United injury updates, Santino Quaranta (staph infection) should be able to resume training by the end of the week. Dejan Jakovic (broken clavicle) is set for an X-ray this week and is 2-3 weeks away. Marc Burch (foot) is on course for a mid-June return, a couple weeks ahead of schedule. Bryan Namoff (whiplash) has enjoyed some improvement – he’s in the midst of a course of injections – but he’s still having both good and bad days and isn’t ready to train.

Lastly, don’t make anything of yesterday’s trial by 19-year-old Uruguayan Fabian Irigoyen. It was just a convenience trial, as Irigoyen was in town for passport reasons. D.C. wasn’t seeking him out. They do meanwhile have plenty of summer signing targets, including potential designated players, but nothing to report further as of now…
