So, up and down for D.C. United last week, eh?
Down: All of Ben Olsen et al’s work to get the field clear ruined by 2+ feet of snow over the weekend. Good times. (My back feeling it, too.)
Up: Troy Perkins and Chris Pontius were named to the U.S. squad that is preparing for El Salvador in Tampa on Feb. 24. If Pontius is healthy, he should get a look. Same goes for Omar Gonzalez and Kevin Alston. In fact, I’d prefer seeing a starting group vastly different from the Honduras game. Why else even say that they could be in contention for the World Cup roster?
Down: Danny Szetela, again. Knee surgery means six weeks lost for the United midfielder. I had someone tell me he was in perhaps his best shape ever to start the year. Unfortunate. Szetela made four appearances in League play last season, with his sole start coming against the Kansas City Wizards during the final game of the year. He also played in five CONCACAF Champions League matches during the campaign, starting three times.
Up: United leaving snow-covered D.C. for Bradenton this week. Unless you got snow shoes or cross country skis, ain’t nuthin’ here for ya right now.
Mixed: United owner Will Chang is on Twitter (@willchangdcu), but that hasn’t exactly made him into a fountain of 149-character revelations. Example: “Caught up with Dave, who briefed me on his trip down south.”
