Drafting a QB? Pick him early

If the Redskins — or any team — wish to take a quarterback, they should consider the performances at the East-West Shrine Game of mid-level players. And that means they should consider drafting one high.

Three of the quarterbacks in Saturday’s game, featuring players who likely would be third-round picks at best, hurt themselves while only one, BYU’s Max Hall, might have helped. One draft guru, the Sporting News’ Russ Lande, rated three quarterbacks among his losers for the week.

Among the big names, Penn State’s Darryl Clark had a rough week of practice, according to numerous reports. Word was, he struggled to complete anything but dump-offs during practice. He was projected as a late-round pick, but based on what he showed this past week, he might go undrafted.

Meanwhile, Hall, according to Lande, displayed the best technique among the quarterbacks, as well as a quick release. The problem for Hall is that he’s just under 6-foot-1 and projects as a backup. Size will be a problem for Kansas’ Todd Reesing as well, since he measured only 5-foot-10.

East quarterback Mike Kafka was named the most valuable player in the game after leading his team to a late touchdown for the win. But he wasn’t all that impressive in the week of practice.

If the Redskins want to draft a quarterback, and it’s likely that they will, then they will have to do so with one of the first two selections.
