For Damrens, déjà vu is painful

There was something alarmingly familiar when the Damren family made an emergency room visit following the Forest Park girls soccer team’s recent game against Woodbridge.

After tallying her third and fourth goals of the season, Bruins forward Stephanie Damren was injured in a collision with the opposing goalkeeper. A doctor’s examination later that night revealed what was initially thought to be a simple contusion was a broken tibia.

Nearly a year to the day her older sister, senior forward Victoria Damren, suffered a season-ending ACL injury, Stephanie Damren found out her sophomore season was over.

“I had no idea until we had gotten to the hospital and my mom said something,” said Stephanie Damren, who expects to spend three more weeks in a cast and the following three months in a brace.

The injury dampened an otherwise stellar comeback season for Victoria Damren, who tallied her 17th and 18th goals as the Bruins (10-4-1, 7-1-1 Cardinal District) topped Potomac, 8-0, on Friday.

Instead of worrying about playing at Florida State next season, these days Victoria Damren has to help her younger sister get down the stairs for breakfast.

“It’s actually made me stronger because I realize it could happen to anyone,” said Victoria Damren. “…I went to the hospital with her that night, and it [was difficult] since I had just been there a year ago.”
