Fourth quarter review

Colt Brennan looks a lot more composed tonight. It helps that he’s getting better protection than Chase Daniel. But, still, Brennan is making good decisions and throwing much more in rhythm. Notice his feet: he’s going 1-2-3-4-5, plant and throw. Makes a difference.

…He’s also not forcing passes. The 87-yard touchdown drive was a nice job by him.

…No, it’s not fair to compare Brennan’s night to Daniel’s because of who they were facing. But, really, this competition has mostly been about Brennan. Had Colt looked like this all preseason we’d be having no discussions about Daniel. Brennan is on tonight.

…Mike Williams still can’t block. He allowed a linebacker to completely get into his pads and drive him back.

…Dominique Dorsey hits the holes fast; he’s not going to run people over, but he has good vision and makes nice cuts. He was better on the sweep. In the past he did not get the proper depth; he did so tonight. For all this talk about Anthony Alridge, Dorsey is another option for the same reason. He’s also been more consistent holding onto the ball, though that was an issue sometimes too.

…Trent Shelton finally made some plays to get noticed, with a couple catches and a tackle on kick coverage.

…Once more, Henson makes himself noticed. Filled the hole on one run and recovered a fumble later in the drive.

…Brennan did a nice job getting out of the pocket on the second series, then making a good run and pass for a first down. He’s going through his progressions nicely.

…Like what I’ve seen of Daniel tonight as well. Made a nice throw to Keith Eloi down the right side to give his guy a chance. But Eloi made a great catch.

…Daniel showed good smarts on his touchdown pass. Noticed the play clock winding down so he hustled them to the line, got the receiver in motion and then stayed poised enough to make the right throw for a touchdown.

…Excuse me, an apparent touchdown. They lost the replay challenge, which seemed unlikely at first glance. But what do we know. Even afterward, still think it was a touchdown.

…But I liked the pass to Mitchell. Good throw to the right spot on Mitchell’s body. Nice grab, too.

…One thing that concerns me with Mitchell: not sure he can beat corners who play press coverage. Good corners, I mean. He can develop in that area. But I’ve noticed a couple times him getting hung up at the line when they play him physically.

…Can you feel the excitement of the fourth preseason game? The 25 people left in the stadium sure can. Certainly, they’ll celebrate the Jags’ 24-17 win deep into the night. The betters will, if they picked the Jags, who were favored by 6.5.
