The Orioles got a chance to take a long look at one of their top young players on Sunday afternoon.
The view wasn’t bad.
Radhames Liz, 25, pitched eight innings, yielding no runs, scattering five hits and walking only one against four strikeouts in a 7-3 win over Minnesota.
Liz (6-5) was demoted to Triple-A Norfolk earlier this season, but the right-hander was dominant after lasting more than six innings for just the second time in his past 12 starts.
“I think I used my mind a little better, and my body,” Liz told reporters. “I wasn’t trying to do too much, and let my emotion get to me with men on base.”
The Orioles (66-82) also have hope for 26-year-old Lou Montanez. The right-handed outfielder is batting .321 with a pair of home runs and 11 RBI in 29 games. Earlier this month, Montanez became the first player in 30 years to win the Double-A Eastern League’s Triple Crown. The league’s Most Valuable Player led in batting (.355), home runs (26) and RBI (97) with the Bowie Baysox.
“You never really expect it,” Montanez told reporters. “But yeah, it’s been the perfect season so far.”
