What we’ve learned

» The Redskins still have a shaky situation at punter. Ryan Plackemeier’s day was better than his stats indicated — he punted eight times for a 37.3-yard average with a 28.8 net. And he did a nice job inside the 20, though he did have a touchback. His hangtime was good, but his first two punts, from inside his own 20, went 32 and 37 yards, respectively. And his last punt, when the Redskins needed to pin down Cleveland deep in its own territory, was an ugly 39-yarder that was returned for 11 yards. The unit does not cover as well as in the past, but the punting still needs more consistency.

» Defensive end Jason Taylor is still not right. Taylor was unofficially credited with no tackles and had no quarterback hurries. Taylor hasn’t shown much burst and hasn’t been disruptive for most of the season. It hasn’t helped that he was considered a slow starter and then was hindered first by a knee injury at the end of training camp and then by his calf problem.

» Rookie tight end Fred Davis continues to get more playing time and was open on a couple throws, one of which Jason Campbell badly misfired, possibly preventing a touchdown. However, the Redskins should scrap the end around to Davis. Talk about a slow-developing play. The Browns had the right call on to stop the play, but it would not have resulted in much regardless of how they played.

Player of note » Kedric Golston • DT
Golston continues to have a solid season and has become entrenched in the starting lineup. He showed his worth on the goal-line. On a first and goal, his penetration disrupted the backfield and allowed others to stuff the play. Later, in the second goal-line sequence, he came backside to make the tackle. Golston is not supremely talented, but coaches love him because of his effort. But now, he’s making more plays.

QB watch » Jason Campbell

Campbell received treatment Monday for his groin, which he tweaked in the first half against the Browns on Sunday. He’s not expected to miss any practice time this week. Whether it was because of the groin or not, Campbell did not have the same rhythm passing the ball — he missed a couple wide-open throws that he normally hits. He still finished with decent stats: 14 of 23 for 164 yards and no interceptions.

Redskins notes

» Corner Shawn Springs (calf), who did not play vs. Cleveland, already is doubtful for Sunday’s game at Detroit, Redskins coach Jim Zorn said. And defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin might eventually join him on the sidelines.

Griffin has played with a sore shoulder and likely won’t practice this week. He wore a brace on his shoulder Sunday. He is expected to see a doctor this week.

“He wants to be with his guys,” Zorn said. “It may be hard to keep him out.”

Corner Carlos Rogers said, “I don’t think one man can stop the show with the guys we’ve got. Shawn is still getting the job done, but without Shawn we can get it done. If we need him to rest we can do it without him.”

» Running back Clinton Portis might miss more practice time this week after getting treatment on his foot, shin, ankle and trapezoid. He missed time last week because of his hip.

“He’s carrying a big load and may need a little rest,” Zorn said, “and I’m willing to give it to him.”

Guard Pete Kendall will see a doctor today about a throat problem. He likely won’t practice Wednesday to give his knees a rest. Zorn described him as “rickety.”

The Redskins are anxious for their Nov. 9 bye week.

“You can see we’re wearing down a little bit,” Zorn said. “Our team has played very physical and it takes its toll.”
