Cheers & Jeers: Some old-fashioned camp competition

The drama over the starters ended long ago. Only one job remains open: defensive tackle — between Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery. But there’s no excitement. Every coach says they’ll probably split time anyway.

So the real competition will be among the backups, where several veterans could get cut in the next 10 days.

Among the candidates:

Chris Wilson » One Redskins vet said Wilson is much improved over last year. If that’s the case, he might want to show the coaches by doing something in a game. Wilson, who had four sacks last year, is in a major numbers crunch. And, with Jason Taylor and Andre Carter, they already have two speed rushers. If Erasmus James shows anything, or even rookie Rob Jackson, Wilson could be in trouble. However, Wilson is a big guy who can run making him a coveted special teamer. The Redskins lack many guys like him on teams. James also is on the bubble if he doesn’t show

Vernon Fox » He’s considered a core special teamer, but he is by no means entrenched. The young safeties — Chris Horton and Kareem Moore — have made an impression and both have looked good on special teams. Fox misses a lot of tackles in the secondary and that won’t help.

Todd Wade » A high ankle sprain has sidelined him the past two weeks. But Wade was in jeopardy of being cut even before his injury. He is not considered a valuable member of special teams, either. His lone benefit is experience, but with Chad Rinehart and Stephon Heyer the Redskins have two young backup tackles (though Heyer has not looked good and Rinehart is better suited for guard).

Derrick Frost » This one is obvious based on how rookie Durant Brooks punted vs. the Jets. Frost is considered a better holder on field goals, but he’s held on just as many misses for Shaun Suisham as Brooks. That negates Frost’s major edge.
