Mystics fire Hargrove

Mystics general manager Linda Hargrove was sacked Monday, following a season in which the Mystics went 10-24 and missed the postseason for the second consecutive year.

“Our basketball team has struggled to make progress and move forward,” said Mystics chief operating officer Greg Bibb. “We feel a change at the top of the basketball side of the business was necessary to begin the process of improving our team.”

After serving as a scout and assistant coach, Hargrove graduated to general manager in 2005, when Sheila Johnson became a part-owner and president of the team.

Johnson said last month she was fed up with the Mystics’ losing tradition, that “our thinking has been far too shortsighted and our player-personnel decisions are far too needs-based.”

But she also gave a vote of confidence to Hargrove.

“She’s done a wonderful job, and she knows what our new mission is,” said Johnson. “And just like everybody else, she’s going to be held to a higher standard.”

Ultimately, that standard led to Hargrove’s departure as the Mystics finished the year losing all eight of their games after the Olympic break.
