Rough weekend for Blast

A season of highs and lows just took another wrong turn for the Blast.

Just when the team was on an eight-game roll, looking like the caliber of club that has won three championships in the past four seasons, the Blast (15-11) dropped two games this weekend to fall from first place.

“It?s a tough weekend. We were on a good roll,” Blast president/general manager Kevin Healey said. “We need to learn from that and just keep moving forward and work on the mistakes we made over the weekend.”

On Sunday afternoon, the team dropped a 10-4 decision to Milwaukee on the heels of a 14-7 loss Friday night in Detroit. Veteran Lee Tschantret and rookie Matt Watson scored the lone goals for the Blast Sunday.

The team now has four more games to turn things around in time for the Major Indoor Soccer League playoffs.

“Obviously we still need to win a game here or there,” Healey said. “We?re not going to assume we?re in the playoffs until we are in.”

On Friday night, the Blast started out flat against Detroit in the eventual 14-7 defeat. With that win, Detroit snuck into first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings.

Denison Cabral scored a three-point goal in the third quarter, while Jonathan Steele and Machel Millwood added two-point goals in the loss.

The offense has hit a dry spell after scoring 10 points or more for seven straight games. In the last three, the team has averaged just over six points per game, and is 1-2 in that stretch.

The top four teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings will make the playoffs. The Blast has four games to turn things around, needing to stay above Milwaukee and Chicago in the standings.

The Blast returns home Friday for a 7:35 game with the Chicago Storm (12-12), before traveling up I-95 to Philadelphia on Saturday for a 5:05 game with the KiXX (15-11). That game will be televised live on VERSUS.
