Orioles, top pick come to terms

The Orioles signed their first-round draft pick, infielder Bill Rowell, the ninth player selected overall in the 2006 amateur draft.

Rowell, from Bishop Eustace Prep in New Jersey, agreed to a $2.1 million signing bonus while turning down a scholarship from the University of Alabama.

Rowell will be in Baltimore to take a physical Wednesday, before reporting to short-season Single-A Bluefield. The 17-year-played shortstop in high school, but projects as either a third baseman or outfielder.

Rowell hit .561 with seven home runs, 37 RBIs and 22 stolen bases as a high school senior.
