New coach expected to turn franchise around

Julie Plank was named head coach of the Washington Mystics on Thursday, marking the franchise’s first move by general manager Angela Taylor, who was named two weeks ago.

When the Mystics tip off next spring, Plank will be the team’s 11th coach in 12 seasons.

Mystics general manager Linda Hargrove was fired Monday after a 10-24 season that ended with a nine-game losing streak. Head coach Tree Rollins was fired during this season and replaced by Jessie Kenlaw.

Plank has been an assistant coach at various levels for 24 years. She was an assistant for the Minnesota Lynx last season and spent the previous eight seasons with the Indiana Fever.

She also has stints as an assistant for the U.S. women’s national team, Stanford and Vanderbilt.
