MAREY CASEY
The junior goalkeeper made a career-best eight saves, but it wasn’t enough as Maryland’s soccer team fell to No. 11 Florida State, 1-0, in overtime. The Seminoles outshot the Terrapins, 24-11, but Casey continually turned them aside and was one of the bright spots for the team after suffering a mild concussion last week against Wake Forest. In five starts this season, Casey has yielded just four goals and stopped 80 percent of the shots she has faced. Maryland (4-6-1, 0-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) hosts Miami (7-4-2, 0-2-1) today at 1 at Ludwig Field in College Park.
LOYOLA MEN’S SOCCER
The 16th-ranked Greyhounds were scheduled to play the 1,000th game in school history when they hosted Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens field. The school also honored its 1971 team, which went 16-0 en route to the NCAA South Region championship. Loyola entered the weekend with a record of 7-0-1 and 620-294-85 all-time.
JOHNS HOPKINS LACROSSE
Defender Michael Evans, attacker Josh Peck and midfielder Andrew Miller will serve as the team’s captains this season. The trio of seniors will try to lead Hopkins to its fifth championship game appearance in the past seven years, beginning on Feb. 21 when the Blue Jays host Siena at Homewood Field. “We believe our players did an outstanding job of selecting individuals with strong character, a great work ethic, proven leadership skills and an attention to detail,” Blue Jays coach Dave Pietramala said. “They will play a pivotal role in the development of our team before and during the upcoming season.”
