At the beginning of the season, 2007-08 player of the year Tyler Hansbrough was the obvious candidate, not only in the race for who would win the same award this season but who would lead North Carolina on another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
It appears that Hansbrough may have been overtaken by a guy that neither he nor most anybody else can catch, literally.

Lighting-quick point guard Ty Lawson’s influence (16.2 points, 6.3 assists, 2.0 steals per game, .551 field goal pct.) on the Tar Heels has been just as important as Hansbrough’s, so much so that the Clinton, Md., native may ultimately be a bigger contender for season-ending accolades.
It’s made his decision to return to Chapel Hill after testing the NBA waters last spring well worth it.
“I’m definitely happy [with my decision to return to college],” Lawson told Examiner intern Melissa Rubin. “I mean I’m playing for a national championship, playing with my team. They always say college is the best years of your life. I’ll never get these years back so I’m glad I’m playing.”
