Worldwide leader going overboard in Miami

ESPN is going Extremely SPastic and Nutso with its coverage of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat, launching the Heat Index within the NBA section of its website next week.

Not only did the network pluck Brian Windhorst from the Cleveland Plain-Dealer — for all things LeBron — and Michael Wallace from the Miami Herald — for all things Wade — but columnist Jemele Hill is set to cover the club scene in South Beach. Take that, TMZ!

And by the way, what about a reporter for Bosh? We’re feeling as let down as Heat fans will by Bosh in the fourth quarter.

ESPN also has a “Chase for 72” module planned to compare the Heat with Michael Jordan‘s Chicago Bulls as well as a triple-double tracker for James and up-to-the-nanosecond comparisons against the best trios in NBA history.

Funny, so much of the discussion about James — especially on ESPN — this offseason has centered around the backlash from the blatantly naïve, greedy, and self-serving way he approached free agency. It’s ironic that ESPN is handling its coverage of James in the same way.
