D.C. United 2, Revolution 1
Francis Doe hadn’t lasted more than 58 minutes and hadn’t scored in either of his first two regular season starts this year.
But with two goals in the final half hour in a 2-1 win over New England in front of 16,672 at RFK Stadium on Thursday, the 22-year-old Liberian, who has become a fixture in the lineup of late due to injuries, kept D.C. United’s postseason hopes alive.
The come-from-behind victory ended United’s 10-game winless streak in all competitions and vaulted them into fourth place in MLS’ Eastern Conference.
United (11-14-4) fell behind on a characteristic defensive breakdown, gifting New England (12-10-7) with the game’s first goal in the 58th minute, when D.C. defender Devon McTavish’s failed counterattack left Revolution midfielder Mauricio Castro wide open to burst down the right side and slide the ball to Taylor Twellman for his 99th career tally.
But Jaime Moreno, who came off the bench to make his first appearance in three league matches, made his presence felt five minutes later, sending through Doe to beat Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis at the near post and tie the game. The goal was United’s first in league play in 375 minutes.
Doe then fought off Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst to score the 80th-minute game winner.
