Boston on wrong end of comeback this time

This was lost in the hype surrounding Montreal’s upset of defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh. But we’re on the verge of the rarest of all sports feats: The 3-0 series choke. It’s only happened three times in the history of Major League Baseball, the NHL or the NBA.

The Boston Bruins, once up 3-0 on the Philadelphia Flyers in a second-round series, are down to a Game 7 after Wednesday’s loss. The most famous example of a team coming back after being down 3-0 is the 2004 Red Sox, who rallied to beat the Yankees.

Looking for something more obscure? In 1975, the Islanders benched future Hall-of-Fame goalie Billy Smith and ripped off four straight wins against the Penguins. The Toronto Maple Leafs did the same to the Detroit Red Wings in 1942. That’s it. That’s the whole list. The Bruins hope they aren’t added to it Friday night.
