Champions Tour star shoots 72 at Woodmont
Former University of Maryland golf coach Fred Funk shot an even-par 72 in his opening round Monday at the North Course at Woodmont Country Club in U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying. Funk, 56, finished fourth Sunday in the Principal Charity Classic, a Champions Tour event in West Des Moines, Iowa, and flew to Washington Sunday night.
With more than half the field complete in the first round, the best scores were turned in by Shane Bertsch (69), a 42-year-old PGA and Nationwide Tour veteran, and David May (69), of Auburn, N.Y., a 2009 Clemson graduate who won his first event as a professional in March, on the EGolf Tour.
Shooting 71 in the morning round were Adam Hadwin of Canada, Paul Haley II of Dallas. Patrick Lundy of Little River, S.C., James Pettitt, Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Nicholas Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., brother of LPGA prodigy Lexie Thompson.
University of Virginia rising sophomore and Chantilly graduate Ji Soo Park (73) has the best score so far among amateurs.
The field of 78 is on the course for the afternoon round. The top seven finishers after 36 holes will qualify for the Open, June 14-17, at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
