The Redskins, continuing to seek depth along the offensive line, signed veteran Tony Moll on Saturday. Moll has started games at right guard and right tackle in the NFL. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Moll will play guard.
He takes the roster spot created when the Redskins placed absent defensive end Kentwan Balmer on a left-camp list. The Redskins need depth along the offensive line with starters Jammal Brown, out indefinitely with hip issues, and left guard Kory Lichtensteiger, likely out for the preseason after arthroscopic knee surgery, sidelined. The Redskins lack veteran depth in the interior. They signed another veteran, Jordan Black, earlier in the week.
Moll has made 22 starts: 13 at right guard, seven at right tackle and two at tight end. He was a fifth-round pick out of Nevada (where he was a converted tight end) by Green Bay in 2006 and started 10 games (five at guard and five at tackle) but appeared in 16. Eighteen of his career starts came in three seasons with the Packers. He was traded to Baltimore after the 2008 season and started three games for the Ravens in 2009. Moll started one game at right guard for San Diego last season.
Moll, who weighs 310 pounds, said he spoke with several teams before signing with the Redskins. He said he’s played in a zone scheme before, but he has not played in this offensive system.
“I can play all five positions, wherever I’m needed,” Moll said. “I can bring that veteran mentality and make a statement.”
