It s Certainly a Long Way From Meet the Press

Presidentially hopeless

The Independent Green Party of Virginia probably doesn’t stand a chance of winning the White House in 2008.

But that sure won’t slow such Green hopefuls as Gail “for Rail” Parker, “Average Joe” Schriner, Jesse Johnson, Kent Mesplay and Daniel Imperato, all of whom debated Tuesday at the National Press Club. Former “Meet the Press” host Marvin Kalb moderated.

And, after all, the Greens have got a killer platform: Schriner said he would “get the polar bears from stopping drowning.” He’d also turn the White House into a solar-paneled home “with no air conditioning.”

Mesplay said we “are not prepared for jack,” and he would initiate an emergency-preparedness program.

Parker’s solution for every policy problem somehow involved high-speed rails.

Although the candidates disagreed on very little, there was some tension between Imperato and moderator Kalb when Imperato was asked about the U.S. policy in Iraq. Kalb interrupted him halfway through his answer and said (very un-Tim Russert like), “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Imperato shot back, “I do; I got this information from my education.” A brief spat ensued, and Kalb quickly ended it by saying, “Hold on, I’m the moderator.”

At the end of the debate, candidates were asked for their closing statements. Parker summed it up when she stated (as if she had won the race), “If you don’t believe in the power of the good Lord now, you’ve got to, because I’ve just been elected president.”

Like most of what was said during the event, we have no idea what the heck she was talking about.
